The wheel width is adjustable by assemblying the side braces in wide (mountain) or narrow (road) slot holes. Also, the ends of the side braces can be further tensioned with a velcro strap. The stand is stable enough to support the bike in a garage, but is not sturdy enough to use for bike maintenance. The only drawback is that this stand does put some side pressure on your spokes where the side braces touch the front or rear wheel..............
